The Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector in the UAE has attained significant progress worldwide ranging from the 6th to 2nd, according to the Global Competitiveness Index (GCI) 2019 dispensed by the World Economic Forum (WEF).
This report is measured as one of the most important global competitiveness reports that countries depend on to measure the performance of their segments.
The ICT segment ranked first among other segments in the country in the level of development in the global ranking. The GCI also weighs the efficiency and competitiveness of the ICT segments in the world through the “ICT adoption” pillar, which comprises a number of global competitiveness indicators that measure the sector’s presentation. The UAE remained the first worldwide in the mobile broadband subscriptions index, in adding to the second place in mobile-cellular telephone subscriptions. The UAE progressed to the fourth position in fiber Internet subscriptions, and fifth in the number of Internet users.
The UAE advanced 35 ranks in fixed- broadband internet subscriptions attaining the 27th position worldwide. Commenting on these accomplishments, Hamad Obaid Al Mansoori, Director-General of the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority, TRA, stated, “The UAE’s achievements in global indicators are collective milestones towards the aim we all seek to attain the country’s global leadership in all fields, especially the ICT segment due to its exceptional importance as key of development in all segments.”
“In the UAE, under the directions of wise leadership, we are eager to create and provide an advanced organization capable of achieving the highest places in the ICT indicators. We are working to generate suitable conditions to accommodate progressive technologies, including Artificial Intelligence technologies and the Internet of Things, in direction to reach the principle of sustainability and upsurge the happiness of society,” he added.
